Immersive Audio in Music, Sound, Art, and Virtual Environments

Summary:
The manipulation of auditory space has emerged as a fundamental compositional element in contemporary music, sound art, and multimedia performance. Recent advances in spatial audio technologies – such as Higher-Order Ambisonics (HOA), Wave Field Synthesis (WFS), and binaural rendering – have enabled highly immersive and interactive sound experiences, especially when integrated with virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) platforms.
This winter school offers a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical principles, technical implementations, and artistic applications of state-of-the-art spatial audio techniques.
Participants will examine multichannel audio signal processing, sound field synthesis, and the psychoacoustics of spatial hearing. Further emphasis will be placed on room acoustics, reverberation modeling, and the challenges of real-time auralisation in immersive virtual environments.
The final day is devoted to practical workshops aimed at sound artists and composers, focusing on creative spatialization strategies, current production tools, and prototyping immersive audio works. This hands-on approach enables participants to translate technical knowledge into artistic practice within VR/AR contexts.
